“A Puerto Rican in New York and Other Sketches,” Jesús Colón
Immigrating from Puerto Rico as a stowaway on a ship when he was an adolescent, Colón depicts his life from then until adulthood in a multitude of short stories with brilliant imagery and sometimes heartrending details. Some he tells from the “I” perspective, while others he tells from the “we”, sometimes meaning Puerto Rican immigrants and other times meaning Latin American immigrants as a whole. He tackles a number of different issues, including colonialism, U.S. imperialism, and the hard time he had finding jobs upon his arrival in the U.S.
Al inmigrar de Puerto Rico como un polizón en un barco cuando era un adolescente, Colón representa su vida desde entonces hasta la edad adulta en una multitud de cuentos cortos con imaginería brillante y a veces detalles dolorosos. Algunos cuenta de la perspectiva de “yo”, mientras otros cuenta de la perspectiva de “nosotros”, a veces para significar los inmigrantes puertorriqueños y otras veces para significar los inmigrantes latinoamericanos en conjunto. Enfrenta varios asuntos, incluyendo colonialismo, el imperialismo de los Estados Unidos, y la dificultad de encontrar trabajo en cuanto a su llegado a los EEUU.

“Pocho,” José Antonio Villarreal
"Pocho" is a different kind of immigrant narrative: one of a young boy born to migrant workers in the Midwest; a family who travels constantly in search of work. Told from the perspective of a child and also semi-autobiographical, this novel depicts the lives of the migrant workers, which are difficult and filled with racism. Although it doesn’t paint a pretty picture, the ending shows the hope of advancement through education.
"Pocho" es un tipo diferente de narrativa inmigrante: uno de un jovencito nacido a trabajadores migrantes en el Medio Oeste; una familia que viaja constantemente en busca de trabajo. Contado de la perspectiva de un niño y también semi-autobigráfica, esta novela representa las vidas de los trabajadores migrantes, las cuales son difíciles y llenas del racismo. Aunque no hace un dibujo lindo, el fin muestra la esperanza del avance por la educación.
