“Martín Rivas,” Alberto Blest Gana
"Martín Rivas" by Chilean author Alberto Blest Gana, is considered Chile’s first novel, as well as the first accurate description of it’s people. Comparable to Jane Austen, Blest Gana writes about a poor man named Martín, who has fallen in love with a rich man’s daughter. The plot follows Martín as he tries to better his social position so that the woman he loves will love him in return.

Comparable a Jane Austen, Blest Gana escribe sobre un hombre pobre, quien se ha enamorado de una hija de un hombre rico. El trama lo sigue como intenta mejorar su posición social así que la mujer que ama lo amará a él a cambio.

"Birds without a Nest,” Clorinda Matto de Turner
Considered as a precursor to the regionalist novel, Clorinda Matto de Turner, in her novel “Birds without a Nest” describes not only the lives of a rich white family, but also that of a poor Indian family. The son of the mayor and the daughter of the Indian woman fall in love, only to find out that they are half-siblings, both children of the previous town bishop. Exiled for her controversial writing, Matto de Turner was kind of a badass for her day, continuing to write in exile and even after the death of her husband as a means to support herself.
Considerado como un precursor a la novela de regionalismo, Clorinda Matto de Turner, en su novela “Aves sin nido” describe no sólo las vidas de una familia blanca y adinerada, sino también las de una familia pobre e india. El hijo del alcalde y la hijo de la mujer india se enamoran, sólo para descubrir que son medio hermanos, los dos hijos del obispo previo del pueblo. Exiliada para su escritura polémica, Matto de Turner era una persona chévere para su tiempo, continuando a escribir en el exilio y aún después de la muerte de su marido como una manera de mantener a ella misma.
