What I’ve Been Reading Lately…/Lo Que He Leído Recientemente

“Klimt,” Gilles Neret (in the Taschen series)

This book is what I would term a beginner’s guide to the art of Gustav Klimt. I also have similar books in the Taschen series for Monet, Frida Kahlo, Diego Rivera, Antoni Gaudi, and others. What’s great about these books is that they describe, in simple enough wording, not only the artist’s art, but also the artist’s life, which contributes to a fuller understanding. All of Klimt’s art has to do with women—he adored and revered them and loved to paint them. He painted ‘femme fatale’: women who are strong and independent of the men who want to own them. For this reason, I love his artwork. Below are two of his later works, “The Kiss” and “Potrait of Adele Bloch-Bauer I”, that you will probably recognize, as they are his most famous.

“Moby Dick,” Herman Melville

If you are looking for a 536-page American literature challenge, then “Moby Dick” should be your first choice. Set in the 1800s in Nantucket, it tells the story of a man named Ishmael who decides to become a whaler and is out on the high seas for three years. His captain is obsessed with capturing the famous whale called Moby Dick, and for three years they chase after him until it’s the end for either the captain or the whale. Along the way, the reader learns everything one needs to know about 19th century whaling, often from an abstract, philosophical point of view. This tome is well worth the read solely from a classic literature standpoint.
