What I’ve Been reading Lately…/Lo Que He Leído Recientemente

“The Lost Symbol,” Dan Brown

"The Lost Symbol" is Dan Brown’s typical novel: extremely short chapters, a fast-paced plot, and a staggering amount of details that makes your mind want to implode. The story follows Robert Langdon, the protagonist of “The Da Vinci Code” and “Angels and Demons” as he is called to give a lecture in D.C. which turns into a wild goose chase to find his mentor, who has been kidnapped. It is too similar of a plot to “The Da Vinci code,” in my opinion: racing through the streets of D.C. trying to find answers before he runs of out of time, all the while uncovering a whole layer of symbolism in a city that the average American apparently doesn’t know much about. The whole story (500+ pages) happens in one night–12 hours more or less, just as in “The Da Vinci Code."

“Monet,” Christoph Heinrich (in the Taschen series)

The thing that I really love about this book series is that you are able to easily learn so much more about the artist than you originally knew. I have loved Monet for a long time, particularly his waterlilies series of paintings, but other than that I knew little about him. This book not only gave me a personal history of Monet, but also a view of how he developed as an artist and how his personal struggles and victories affected his art. It also contains many pictures of his artwork; a favorite of mine was two pictures of landscapes, one in the morning and one in the afternoon. The book was talking about how Monet liked to paint the same scene during different times of the day because for him light was essential–but this explanation was not necessary–you could tell just by looking what time of day it was when Monet painted it, such was his skill for using light in his painting.
