I recently had to read two works by Emilia Pardo Bazán, one of the only women writers of 19th century Spain to be categorized with the likes of Leopoldo Alas, Benito Pérez Galdós, Emile Zola, and other writers of this time period.
She is also considered as a feminist writer, another aspect not found very often in 19th century writing anywhere.
The first was "Los Pazos de Ulloa,“ which roughly translates to "The country homes of Ulloa,” and is about a priest, Juan, who goes to live with a family who has problems, unbeknownst to him. The patriarch, Pedro, is having an affair with the servant’s daughter, who has had a child by him, and according to the priest are living in sin.
With the prompting of Juan, Pedro marries his first cousin, only to treat her badly after she bears him a daughter. After an incident that ends in the near death of the wife and her child, Juan flees from Ulloa, and returns 10 years later to find the legitimate child serving the role of maid to the original servant’s child, a boy.
The second work, “Insolación,” is about a widow, Asís, who is having an affair and constantly worried about what society will think about her, to the point where she is having migraines that she blames on getting too much sun. Eventually she simply marries the man she was having an affair with to calm her conscience.
As can be seen from her writing, Pardo Bazán wrote from the female perspective about societal issues that were often frowned upon. To describe sexual relations from the point of view of a woman was very scandalous, and Pardo Bazán made waves with her writing.

Recientemente tuve que leer dos obras de Emilia Pardo Bazán, una de las únicas escritoras del siglo XIX en España para ser categorizada con escritores como Leopoldo Alas, Benito Peréz Galdós, Emile Zola, y otros escritores de este periodo.
También se considera como una escritora feminista, otro aspecto que no se encuentra frecuentemente en la escritura del siglo XIX en ningún lugar.
La primera fue “Los Pazos de Ulloa” que se trata de un sacerdote, Juan, que se muda con una familia que tiene problemas, aunque él no sabe. El figura paterna, Pedro, tiene relaciones con la hija del criado, quien tiene un hijo de él, y según el sacerdote están viviendo en pecado.
Con la instigación de Juan, Pedro se casa con su prima, sólo para tratarla mal después de que ella se parte una hija. Después de un incidente que termina con la casi muerte de ella y de la hija, Juan se huye de Ulloa, y vuelve 10 años más tarde para encontrar la hija legitima sirviendo el rol de criada al hijo del criado original.
La segunda obra, “Insolación,” se trata de una viuda, Asís, quien tiene relaciones y constantemente se preocupa sobre lo que piensa la sociedad sobre ella, al punto de que ella tiene jaquecas, y ella las culpa en tomar demasiado sol. Eventualmente ella se casa el hombre con quien estaba teniendo relaciones para calmar su consciencia.
Como se puede ver de su escritura, Pardo Bazán escribió de la perspectiva femenina sobre los asuntos sociales que frecuentemente fueron desaprobados. Describir las relaciones sexuales del punto de visto de una mujer fue escandalosa, y Pardo Bazán era muy polémica con so escritura.
