“El laberinto de la soledad,” Octavio Paz
In “The Labyrinth of Solitude,” Octavio Paz offers his own personal insight as to what it means to be not only a Mexican, but a citizen of the world, bringing in concepts such as machismo and marianismo, and constantly dancing around the Mexican Revolution, which has defined Mexico not only in this century, but for years to come. Referring to solitude as “the profoundest fact of the human condition,” Paz determines that solitude comes in many forms, including death: “Each of us dies the death he is looking for, the death he has made for himself.” In other words, you die the death you lived in life.
En “El laberinto de la soledad,” Octavio Paz ofrece su entendimiento personal en cuanto a lo que significa ser no sólo mexicano, sino también un ciudadano del mundo, usando conceptos como machismo y marianismo, y constantemente bailando sobre la Revolución Mexicana, la cual ha definido Mexico no sólo en este siglo, sino también en los años venideros. "La ciudad y los perros,“ or "The Time of the Hero” in English, follows a groups of boys in a military school in Lima, Peru. Told from multiple points of view and with interlacing dialogue, the military school serves as a stand in for the government of Peru, which had been ruled by a military dictatorship for many years. Most of the boys’ antics are just that–antics–until one day power and revenge got the best of them and one of them is murdered, changing all of their lives forever.
"La ciudad y los perros" sigue un grupo de chicos en una escuela militar en Lima, Peru. Dicho de multiples puntos de visto y con diálogos entrelazados, la escuela militar sirve como un pretexto para el gobierno de Peru, el cual ha sido gobernado por una dictadura militar por muchos años. La mayoría de las bufonerías de los chicos son sólo eso–bufonerías–hasta un día el poder y la venganza les ganaron y uno de ellos se asesinó, cambiando sus vidas para siempre.
