“La muerte de Artemio Cruz,” Carlos Fuentes
Artemio Cruz is on his deathbed, reliving his life through past memories and recordings while revealing to readers his secrets of how he became rich and powerful. At the same time, he illustrates an interesting picture of life in Mexico post-Revolution and the (not so) legal things the hacienda owners did to stay in power. Throughout the novel, Artemio’s thought about going to but not crossing the river is repeated, and when one reverses his name–temió cruzar (in English he feared to cross)–the question of why and of what is he afraid? comes into play.
Artemio Cruz está en su lecho de muerte, reviviendo su vida por memorias pasadas y grabaciones mientras revelando los lectores sus secretos de como se hizo adinerado y poderoso. Al mismo tiempo, ilustra un imagen interesante de vida en Mexico pos-Revolución y las cosas (no tan) legales los dueños de las haciendas hicieron para mantener su poder. A lo largo de la novela, el pensamiento de Artemio sobre yendo pero no cruzando el río se repite, y cuando se invierte su nombre–temió cruzar–la pregunta de por qué y de qué tiene miedo? entra en juego.

“La última niebla,” María Luisa Bombal
María Luisa Bombal is known for her riveting, honest portrayal of women’s life during her time, and “The House of the Mist” (English translation) is no exception. The main character, who remains unnamed, is stuck in a loveless marriage to her first cousin, and with no escape. Bombal’s narrative exposes what a woman in that position would do to escape, at least mentally if not physically, in this case in the form of an imaginary affair with a blind man who falls down the stairs to his death.
Se conoce María Luisa Bombal para su reseña cautivador y honesta de la vida de las mujeres durante su tiempo, y “La última niebla” no es una excepción. La personaje principal, quien se queda sin nombre, está atascada en un matrimonio desamorado a su primo, y sin fuga. La narrativa de Bombal expone lo que una mujer en esa posición haría para huir, por lo menos mentalmente si no físicamente, en este caso en la forma de un lío imaginario con un ciego que se cae la escalera a su muerte.
