What I’ve Been Reading Lately…

“The Blind Side,” Michael Lewis

What I thought would be a light plane read turned out to be a virtual playbook. Filled with football plays, explanations and history, “The Blind Side” is definitely hit or miss. While I enjoyed the story of Michael Ohr and how he went from boy without a home to football star, the pages and pages of technical football talk did nothing for me. I often read the words without comprehending anything, my mind elsewhere. This was however, an easy read, so I would suggest it for anyone who loves sports but not necessarily reading. This is also a rare case where I would recommend the movie over the book. Actually, I believe it’s more than rare; it’s the first (and possibly only) time it’s happened…

“Animal Farm,” George Orwell

First published in 1945, “Animal Farm” is indisputably a satirical observation not only on human nature, but also on the nature of dictatorships. Certainly a commentary about what was happening in the world at that time, Orwell begins his short novel on Manor Farm, where, according to the pigs, the animals are being maltreated. The pigs shortly organize a rebellion and drive the farmers away, thus becoming the leaders of the farm. From the beginning the pigs can be seen as impressing their rules and ways of life on the other animals, but the other animals do not realize it until it is too late. Are they pigs or humans? Leaders or dictators? “Animal Farm” offers an interesting examination of human nature and what happens when a small group of humans (or pigs) has all the power.
