“The Moths and Other Stories,” Helena María Viramontes
"The Moths and Other Stories" is a collection of vignettes about growing up Chicana in the United States, and deal with themes such as patriarchy, feminism, gender roles and societal expectations. This collection is distinct in two ways: it is written from a woman’s point of view (much of what she wrote was inspired by her real life growing up with a machista father and submissive mother), and it portrays girls’ life from adolescence to adulthood, which was not frequently done before this collection. Each of the characters has to deal with hardship, such as unwanted pregnancy, abortion, or an unfaithful lover, and the way in which she deals with it shows just how far women have come, and how far they still have to go.
"The Moths and Other Stories" es una colección de viñetas sobre crecerse chicana en los EEUU, y se trata con temas como el patriarcado, el feminismo, los roles de género, y las expectativas de la sociedad. Esta colección es distinta en dos maneras: se escribe desde la perspectiva de la mujer (mucho de lo que escribió fue inspirado por su vida real creciéndose con un padre machista y una madre sumisa), y muestra la vida de chicas de la adolescencia hasta la edad adulta, el cual no se hacía con frecuencia antes de esta colección. Cada uno de los personajes tiene que encargarse de una adversidad, como un embarazo indeseado, un aborto, o un amante infiel, y la manera en que ella se encarga de ello muestra tanto las mujeres han logrado, y tanto todavía tienen que conseguir.

“Spiks,” Pedro Juan Soto
Pedro Juan Soto’s collection of vignettes is strikingly similar to the Chicano short story collections that I have previously read; a mix of Jesús Colón and Viramontes. For example, his stories also feature life in New York as an immigrant, but several of his stories feature women as protagonists, and several also deal with life on the island in the beginning of U.S. domination, when English was being enforced as the official language.
La colección de viñetas de Pedro Juan Soto es impresionantemente similar a las colecciones chicanas de cuentos cortos que he leído previamente; una mezcla de Jesús Colón y Viramontes. Por ejemplo, sus cuentos también presentan la vida en Nueva York como inmigrante, pero varios de sus cuentos presentan a las mujeres como protagonistas, y varios otros también se tratan con la vida en la isla en el principio de la dominación de los EEUU, cuando el inglés se hacía cumplir como el idioma oficial.
