What I’ve Been reading Lately…/Lo Que He Leído Recientemente

“The Sibling Effect: What the Bonds among Brothers and Sisters Reveal about Us,” Jeffrey Kluger

Although Kluger uses him and his siblings constantly throughout his book, (so much so that I remember all their names with ease) I felt as if I were reading about myself and my brothers most of the time. When describing the oldest as the most motivated and hardworking, the youngest as the funniest and most likely to screw around, and the middle as the lost one, always searching for something to be the best at, that’s basically my brothers and I. I especially enjoyed this insight, as I always thought this only happened in my house. Turns out I’m definitely not alone. “A household with multiple siblings is a parliament of personalities that are forever in motion–and often in conflict. There are alliances and feuds, loyalties and betrayals. Slights are remembered and favors are banked. Daily wars erupt…requiring compromises to be negotiated and peace deals to be struck–deals that only last until the next outbreak of hostilities, which can easily happen within the hour.” I guess most families face the same things when it comes down to it.

"A household with multiple siblings is a parliament of personalities that are forever in motion–and often in conflict. There are alliances and feuds, loyalties and betrayals. Slights are remembered and favors are banked. Daily wars erupt…requiring compromises to be negotiated and peace deals to be struck–deals that only last until the next outbreak of hostilities, which can easily happen within the hour.“ Supongo que la mayoría de las familias enfrentan las mismas cosas de cuando es cuestión.

"The WhistleBlower: Sex Trafficking, Military Contractors, and One Woman’s Fight for Justice,” Kathryn Bolkovac with Cari Lynn

Kathy Bolkovac was a cop in Nebraska looking for a fresh start when she happened upon a wanted ad for help in setting up a new government in Bosnia. Eager to travel and get away from her divorce, she applied and was immediately accepted. But the job wasn’t what she expected. From the beginning the company that hired her was unorganized and not concerned about getting work done or following the rules. This bothered her, but she figured it would be different when she got there and that she could change things for the better. After a year of working in Bosnia, she began to notice things and eventually uncovered a scandal: her company’s employees were sex trafficking. Although she had every kind of evidence for her claims, her company wouldn’t listen to her, fired her, and she had to flee to the Netherlands, where she sued her company and won. “The Whistleblower” also became a movie.
