“The Convert: A Tale of Exile and Extremism,” Deborah Baker
"The Convert" is Baker’s attempt at explaining the life of Margaret Marcus, a young Jewish woman who converted to Islam, changed her name to Maryam Jameelah, and moved to Pakistan. Baker does this through letters and books she found in Jameelah’s file in the New York public library, and while examining Jameelah’s life she also asks questions that many readers can easily identify with, about the credibility of religion, how other countries perceive us, and how much of our perspective has to do with the fact that we live in what she calls a ‘well-armed country’. Although interesting, Baker’s novel can be a bit confusing, because she switches back and forth between telling the reader about Jameelah and about her own life without setting any precedent for how and when she does this. She herself even questions her style for the book at the very end, concluding that although it can be confusing, she is happy with the way she chose to write it.

"The Convert" es el esfuerzo de Baker a explicar la vida de Margaret Marcus, una joven mujer judía la quien se convirtió a Islam, cambió su nombre a Maryam Jameelah, y se mudó a Paquistán. Baker lo hace por las cartas y los libros las que encontró en la biblioteca pública de Nueva York, y mientras estaba examinando la vida de Jameelah también preguntó muchas cuestiones las que muchos lectores pueden identificar fácilmente, sobre la credibilidad de la religión, cómo otros países nos perciben, y cuánta de nuestra perspectiva tiene que ver con el hecho que vivimos en, según ella, un ‘well-armed country’. “Silver Linings Playbook,” Matthew Quick
I saw the movie version of this book first, which is something I always try to avoid, but I didn’t even know it was a book until after the fact. And I have to say, woah was the book better. x100 better. Throughout the book we get the commentary of the main character, Pat, who has just come back from a stay at the mental hospital and is trying to piece his life back together to reconcile with his (ex) wife. At times plain funny and at others starkly honest, Pat’s thoughts are what take this book to the next level and make it better than the film, although the film was also excellent.

Vi la versión de la película de este libro primero, lo cual es algo que intento evitar siempre, pero no sabía que era un libro hasta después de lo sucedido. Y tengo que decir, vaya el libro fue mejor. x100 mejor. Por el libro recibimos el comentario del personaje principal, Pat, el quien justo retornó de una estancia en un hospital psiquiátrico y está intentando arreglar su vida y reconciliarse con su (ex) mujer. A veces cómico y a otras severamente honesto, los pensamientos de Pat son lo que aumenta este libro al nivel más alto y lo hace mejor que la peli, aunque la peli era excelente también.
