“Feeding on Dreams,” Ariel Dorfman

   "Feeding on Dreams" is the second memoir of exile Ariel Dorfman, who lived in many different countries during his life and is now settled in North Carolina. He was living in Chile when Salvador Allende became president, and worked for his government. When the military coup happened, Dorfman and his wife barely made it out of the country alive and started their exile through a host of countries: Argentina, the U.S., France, and the Netherlands. In his memoir, Dorfman reflects on his struggle between his revolutionary ideals and his lifestyle choices, ultimately concluding that his revolutionary days are over.

   "Feeding on Dreams" es la segunda memoria del exiliado Ariel Dorfman, el quien vivió en muchos países diferentes durante su vida y ahora vive en Carolina del Norte. Estaba viviendo en Chile cuando Salvador Allende se hizo el presidente, y trabajó para su gobierno. Cuando el golpe militar pasó, Dorfman y su mujer apenas salieron del país vivos y empezaron su exilio en una multitud de países: Argentina, los EEUU, Francia, y Holanda. En su memoria, Dorfman refleja sobre sus pruebas entre sus ideales revolucionarios y sus elecciones del estilo de vida, y finalmente decide que sus días revolucionarios son terminados.

“Tiempo de Silencio,” Luis Martín-Santos

   This experimental novel about the difference between the social classes during Franco’s dictatorship in Spain is called experimental for a reason. With chapters that are ten pages long and a single paragraph and paragraphs that are a page long and only made up of two sentences, “Tiempo de Silencio” (“Time of Silence” in English) is an adventure and a half. It follows Pedro, a young researcher called to the house of one of his assistants late at night to help the daughter, who is dying of a botched abortion. We later find out that the girl was raped by her father and her father performed the abortion that would kill her, but first Pedro is blamed and spends time in jail, eventually being exiled from Madrid.

   Esta novela experimental sobre la diferencia entre las clases sociales durante el dictadura de Franco en España es llamada experimental para una razón. Con capítulos de diez páginas y de una párrafo solo, y párrafos de una página y de dos frases solo, “Tiempo de Silencio” es una aventura. Sigue a Pedro, un investigador joven que es llamado a la casa de uno de sus asistentes muy tarde por la noche para ayudar a la hija, la quien está muriendo de un aborto metido la pata. Más tarde descubrimos que la muchacha fue violada por su padre y su padre cumplió el aborto el que la mataría, pero primero Pedro es culpado y pasa un rato en la cárcel, y eventualmente es exiliado de Madrid.
