"El Cuarto de atrás,“ or "The Back Room,” by Carmen Martín Gaite, is a stream-of-conciousness novel that takes place in a single night and follows a conversation between the narrator, C, and el hombre de negro (the man in black). As the night progresses, C relives many of her childhood memories during the war and also during Franco’s regime, and the reader sees her identity formation and development through other female characters and also through the societal standards of the time. The question the novel leaves the reader with is this: is the man in black real, a product of C’s subconscious, or her subconscious itself?

Mientras progresa la noche, C revive muchas de sus memorias de la niñez durante la guerra y también durare el régimen de Franco, y el lector ve la formación y el desarrollo de su identidad por otras personajes femeninas y también por las normas sociales del periodo. La pregunta que deja la novela es esta: ¿es el hombre de negro auténtico, un producto del subconsciente de C, o su subconsciente sí mismo?

In an unnamed Pan-American country torn apart by war and guerrilla activity, Norma runs a radio show where she says the names of the disappeared, and lets people call in to talk about their missing loved ones. What her listeners don’t know, however, is that the show hits close to home for Norma, too: her husband, Rey, has been missing for many years, since the war’s end, and Norma is still hoping and awaiting his return. When a boy shows up at the radio station with a list of names and looking for Norma, she has no way of knowing his importance, or the ways in which he will change her life forever.
En un país panamericano sin nombre lo cual está arrasado por la guerra y la actividad guerrilla, Norma tiene un programa del radio en lo cual dice los nombres de los desaparecidos, y permite que la gente llame para hablar de sus seres queridos desparecidos.
