“Drown,” Junot Díaz
The first book I’ve read for pleasure since the semester started, “Drown” is a collection of short stories documenting how Yunior immigrated to the United States. The stories jump to different places in time and the reader sees Yunior in the Dominican Republic as a child, in New Jersey as an adult, and in New York as a teenager. And yes, this Yunior is the same Yunior as the one in Oscar Wao!
El primer libro que he leído para el simple placer desde el principio del semestre, “Drown” is una colección de cuentos que documenta cómo inmigró Yunior a los Estados Unidos. Los cuentos saltan a lugares diferentes en tiempo y el lector ve a Yunior en la República Dominicana como un niño, en Nueva Jersey como un adulto, y en Nueva York como un adolescente. ¡Y si, este Yunior es el mismo Yunior como él en Oscar Wao!

“One Hundred Years of Solitude,” Gabriel García Márquez
Although I will be reading this next semester in Spanish, reading is much more enjoyable (and less work) for me in English, and I wanted a chance to enjoy García Márquez’s masterpiece in my native tongue first. Following the Buendía family for one hundred years and many generations in the fictional town of Macondo, “One Hundred Years of Solitude” is the first example of magical realism in literature. People live for more than 100 years (many more), and when they die they become ghosts that stay around the house and talk with the living relatives, and their whole story has already been written down by a gypsy, to be transcribed by the final surviving member of the family decades later.
Aunque leeré esto en el próximo semestre en español, leer escucho más agradable (y menos trabajo) para mí en inglés, y quería la oportunidad para disfrutar la obra maestra de García Márquez en mi lengua nativa primero. Siguiendo la familia de los Buendía por cien años y muchas generaciones en el pueblo ficticio de Macondo, “Cien Años de Soledad” es el primer ejemplo del realismo mágico en la literatura. Las personas viven por más de cien años (mucho más), y cuando se mueren se hacen en fantasmas que se quedan por la casa y hablan con los parientes vivos, y el cuento de la familia ya ha sido escrito por un gitano, para ser transcribido por el miembro final de la familia décadas más tarde.
