“La vida es sueño,” Pedro Calderón de la Barca
"La vida es sueño,“ or "Life is a Dream,” by Pedro Calderón de la Barca, is one of his most famous plays and focuses on the central theme of dreams and reality, and the difference between the two (if there is one). Segismundo, son of the king and rightful heir to the throne, is locked up by his father after a prophecy claims that Segismundo will bring bad fortune to the kingdom. After being locked up for decades, Segismundo is let free and immediately begins to prove the prophecy right. The king then locks him back up again, convincing him that it was just a dream and he was never free. The play makes readers question reality and if what we think is real is real, or is just deception.

Segismundo, el hijo del rey y heredero legítimo al trono, está encerrado por su padre después de una profecía asegura que Segismundo llevará fortuna mala al reino. Después de estar encerrado por décadas, Segismundo está liberado y inmediatamente empieza a demostrar que la profecía era correcta. El rey lo encierra otra vez, y lo convence que fue un sueño y nunca fue libre. El teatro los hace cuestionar la realidad los lectores y si lo que pensamos es real es real, o sólo una decepción.

“Ficciones,” Jorge Luis Borges
Continuing with the theme of reality, Jorge Luis Borges, said to be Argentina’s most famous writers, wrote poems, short stories and essays, but is most well-known for his collection of short stories entitled “Ficciones,” or “Fictions” in English. Each story is independent of the others, and each in some way deals with the theme of reality: what is real and what is deception. Borges creates fictional writers and then reviews their fictional works, creates worlds with new languages and ways of living, and tells stories with surprise endings. His stories have been called labyrinths, and it’s easy to understand why after reading only one of his stories–it can leave you confused and knowing less than when you started it.
Para continuar con el tema de la realidad, Jorge Luis Borges, uno de los escritores más famosos de Argentina, escribió poemas, cuentos cortos, y ensayos, pero es más conocido por su colección de cuentos cortos titulado “Ficciones.” Cada cuento es independiente de los demás, y cada en alguna manera se trata con el tema de la realidad: lo que es real y lo que es decepción. Borges crea escritores ficticios y luego reseña sus obras ficticias, crea mundos con nuevos idiomas y maneras de vivir, y cuenta cuentos con fines sorprendentes. Sus cuentos han sido llamado laberintos, y es fácil entender por qué después de leer sólo uno de sus cuentos–lo deja confundido y sabiendo menos que cuando lo empezó.
