What I’ve Been Reading Lately…/Lo que he leído recientemente

“We came all the way from Cuba so you could dress like this?” Achy Obejas

I read this collection of short stories in a class on Latino literature. Obejas immigrated from Cuba with her parents when she was a child, and many of her short stories reflect that, as well as her queer identity. One of my favorite in this book deals with the American Dream, and how it benefits different people in different ways.

“The Faith Healer of Olive Avenue,” Manuel Muñoz

Muñoz’s collection of short stories with characters that are connected, but that you only find out are connected after reading all of the short stories, reminded me greatly of Junot Diaz. From a mother dealing with the death of her son, to the mother dealing with her twin sons who caused an accident, most of these characters live in the same neighborhood and interact with each other, although as mentioned this is not known until the end.
