The meaning behind the name…

Already I have had quite a few people ask me why I chose the name I did for this blog.

A few months ago I went to New York City for a student conference at the New York Times. (Yes, very cool!)

One of the last speakers we listened to talked about interviewing people, and the one question he always asked: What fruit are you? He went on to explain what fruit he was, and how you could tell a lot about a person by the way they answered.

   Well, I am a grapefruit.

Grapefruits are stubborn: you have to work hard to get past the skin, and even then they are not easy to deal with, but they are completely worth it. They have a thick skin and are hard to bother, but underneath they are sensitive.

There are many grapefruit varieties, making each one unique and individualistic.

They are also unpredictable–the color of a grapefruit’s skin does not necessarily say how ripe it is–a green-colored grapefruit can be just as ripe as a pink-colored grapefruit.

Grapefruits are reliable–they last longer than most other fruits: 2-3 months in the fridge!

They are also multifaceted–there is more than what meets the eye: they can not only be eaten, but they can also be used for their juice in recipes and their oil for therapeutic purposes. Grapefruits’ oil can be used to boost mood, increase concentration, improve self-confidence and fight acne. It also mixes well with other oils, such as lavender, geranium, palma rosa, frankincense, and bergamot. Hence it gets along well with others, but is still alright by itself. It is a powerful antioxidant, making it strong–it takes care of others while also being independent and taking care of itself.

Lastly, one grapefruit has a whole day’s worth of vitamin C. Talk about health benefits.

Not to mention that grapefruits are generally my favorite colors–orange and pink!

I’m sure you now know more about grapefruits than you ever thought you would, and I hope I have got you thinking about what your fruit is. Happy deciding, and let me know what you have chosen!
