This weekend I visited the cities of Ponferrada and Santiago de Compostela, both on the Way of St. James, a pilgrimage-style walk across the northern half of Spain.
Ponferrada is technically still in Castille-Leon, and Santiago is in Galicia, and both were beautiful, as was the stunning countryside.
We started at the Knights Templar Castle in Ponferrada, which was not only a castle but also held an exhibition about the Templar Order and a huge collection of old books.The rest of Ponferrada was the normal Spain: churches, but with the added intrigue of shells in every direction you looked–the symbol of the pilgrimage.
After spending Friday in Ponferrada, we moved on to Santiago on Saturday, the finish point for the Way of St. James. The cathedral there was astounding–not only was it huge on the inside, but the outside was grand in detail and style.
Throughout the weekend we saw many, many pilgrims–you can always tell by their backpacks designated with a shell. This has inspired me to return to Spain one day (as if this part wasn’t already in my plans) and complete ‘the walk’; at least the Spanish portion, because there is a French portion as well.
I think Galicia has been my favorite region of Spain so far. With its mountainous beauty it reminded me of Portugal, Lisbon in particular, which remains one of my favorite places that I have visited.

Este fin de semana visité las ciudades de Ponferrada y Santiago de Compostela, las dos en El Camino de Santiago, un camino de peregrinos por la mitad norte de España.
Técnicamente, Ponferrada ya es en Castilla y León, y Santiago es en Galicia, y las dos eran hermosas, como el paisaje impresionante.
Empezamos al Castillo de Templarios en Ponferrada, lo cual fue un castillo y también una exposición del orden templario y una colección de libros antiguos. El resto de Ponferrada fue lo normal: las iglesias, pero con intriga añadida de las conchas en cada dirección que se veía–el emblema de la peregrinación.
Despues de pasar el viernes en Ponferrada, continuamos a Santiago el sábado, el sitio final para el Camino de Santiago. Allí la catedral era asombrosa–no sólo era grandísima dentro, sino también afuera era grande en detalles y estilo.
Durante el fin de semana vimos muchos, muchos peregrinos–siempre se puede notarlos por sus mochilas indicadas con las conchas. Esto me ha inspirado a volver a España otra vez (como si esta parte ya no en mis planes) y hacer el camino; por lo menos la parte de España, porque hay una parte de Francia también.
Creo que me ha gustado Galicia más de las otras regiones de España hasta ahora. Con su belleza montañosa, me recordó de Portugal, Lisboa en particular, lo cual permanece uno de mis sitios favoritos en lo que he estado.
