On the road again: Segovia

This weekend one of my friends and I traveled to Segovia, which is about two hours southwest of Palencia.

Segovia is a city of about 47,000 people and has three amazing things that it is famous for (among museums and other sites).

   1. Aqueduct: this is a massive structure built by the Romans. An aqueduct, for anyone who doesn’t know, is built to carry water from the original source to a different location for convenience. The kicker is that no one knows how the Romans managed to build something this big and that has more or less survived in good shape into modern times.

   2. Cathedral: Of course Segovia has a cathedral, as any Spanish city does. But what makes Segovia’s cathedral different is the magnificent structure. The inside is the same as any other Spanish church, but the outside is a different story.

   3. Last but certainly not least is the Alcazar. The Alcazar is a castle that King Ferdinand and Queen Isabella lived in. The tour takes you through all the rooms of the castle, from their bedroom to the room in which they received visitors, which was my favorite. One more fun fact: this castle was Walt Disney’s inspiration for Cinderella’s castle at Disney World!

It seemed like all the buildings in the center of Segovia were decorated in an intricate mudejar-esque pattern that would have taken a verrrry long time to complete. The Muslim influence, as well as the Roman, can be seen throughout Segovia and makes a very enchanting place, with its own style different from anywhere else I have been in Spain.

It is definitely worth a visit, so put it on your list 🙂
