Badass Women: Isabel Barreto

Isabel Barreto was the first woman admiral in history, and although unknown to most of the world today, is regaining fame in her native Galicia, and around the rest of Spain as well. I first read about her in a book about women of action in the Siglo de Oro (Golden Age), and my next few posts will be about the other women in that book. Married off at 18 years old, she followed her husband on his next voyage, even though it was something women generally didn’t do in those times. She had an adventurous spirit, easy to see throughout her whole life. Upon the death of her husband, she took up his title of admiral and continued on with the voyage, which had previously encountered the Marquesa Islands in French Polynesia. Much of what we know about her today (almost all of it, actually) was recorded by a man who hated her and was extremely jealous of her, calling her cruel and authoritarian, and insulting her for the way she lived and the way she dressed. Today we can recognize all of this as machismo at its finest, and live in the assurance that we will remember her not only for her indomitable spirit and resolute strength, but also for the exceptional life she lived in a time when women were prohibited from doing anything special at all.
